Three signals tell a person sent by an AI assistant apart from everyone else, and from the bots.
The link they clicked
When someone clicks a link inside an AI assistant, the browser usually tells your site where the visit came from, such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. AppWT Analytics matches it against 132 known AI referrer domains.
The tag on the link
Some assistants open links in their own in-app browser or add a tag to the links they show. AppWT Analytics reads AI in-app browsers and AI tags. ChatGPT's utm_source=chatgpt.com tag is listed today under referrals from chatgpt.com, not in the AI referral count.
The bots, kept apart
Crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot fetch pages for AI training, search and answers. They go to their own report, so a busy week for crawlers never looks like a busy week for customers.
What no analytics tool can see
A person who copies an address out of an AI answer and pastes it into a new tab arrives with no referrer, so that visit looks direct. Voice search figures are estimates from device and time-of-day signals, not exact counts. AppWT Analytics labels both plainly instead of guessing.
